It’s been more than two years since the first day-night test match was introduced to international cricket. While most of the teams have already tried the experiment, it’s India that has been completely unaware of the concept.
However, a decision is to be made soon regarding the same. According to BCCI acting Secretary Amitabh Choudhary, day-night Test cricket with the pink ball will soon be introduced in India. There might already be discussions in full flow regarding the same.
Amitabh admitted that the question had been hovering around for a significant period of time. He indicated that the context of the same was in relation to other matches and not the one in Afghanistan.
“This question has been popping up every now and then (about playing and hosting day-night Test) and rightly so. A decision will be taken sooner than later but not in the context of this Test match against Afghanistan,” Amitabh Choudhary was quoted as saying by PTI.
He was present as the dates were announced. Afghanistan’s inaugural test against India has been scheduled at the Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru. The match is supposed to be played between the 14th of June to the 18th of June.
Why so late?
What comes as a surprise is that India is yet to experiment the same. Playing under lights could be the key to Test cricket’s future. The purpose of day-night Tests was to make the format more viewer-friendly. Hence, it needs the backing of the No.1 test team India in order to make it a success.
Earlier, BCCI President Anurag Thakur had declared that India will play New Zealand in a day-night Test. The announcement was made way back in 2016 but things never worked out even after that. However, the current statement from the BCCI secretary suggests that day night tests in India may just be round the corner.
