All-rounder Hardik Pandya surge at the international level has been quite overwhelming. Pandya, who made his T20I debut earlier this year, has now made his way into India’s Test squad for the upcoming 5-match series against England. The decision to include him the Tests raised a few eyebrows as he was always been primarily seen as a limited-overs specialist. But, selectors feel that he is the right candidate to fill the fast bowling all-rounder’s slot in the team.

Earning the maiden call-up to the sport’s traditional format is obviously a proud moment and the 23-year old was also delighted with his progress. Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, Hardik reflected on the prospect of representing India in the longest format.

He said, “Honestly, being called for the Tests is more pleasing and happier moment. I have been in the scheme of things as far as ODIs are concerned for a while, but to get a call for Test cricket is the main thing. It tests your temperament, fitness, work ethics and mental strength.”

A major turnaround in his career came during the 55-day tour with India A to Australia where he worked Rahul Dravid who helped him shape his personality.

“We were talking about what is a natural game,” Pandya revealed. “He [Dravid] said that there is no such thing called a natural game. It is just that in cricket you play according to the situation, and you win the games.”

Pandya’s father and coach were also understandably elated on his elevation to whites. The festive atmosphere generated by Diwali combined with the delightful news was quite visible in the family.

Delighted with his son’s selection, Himanshu Pandya enthused, “It is my dream to see both my sons play Test cricket and now one dream is about to be realized. We’ve got one of the best Diwali gifts, the celebrations and sweets continue after the festival as well now. I don’t want to talk about myself because every parent wants to give their best for their kids. It is Hardik’s hard work and dedication that has paid off now.”
