Ben Curran, brother of Sam Curran, gets signed by Northamptonshire
The young left-hander is the son of former County captain Kevin, and brother of Surrey and England pair Sam and Tom.
The Curran family seems to be an absolute goldmine when it comes to producing quality cricketing talent. From Kevin Curran to his sons, Tom and Sam Curran and now Ben Curran, the legacy of the family is increasing one player at a time. Recently, 22-year-old Ben Curran was signed by Northamptonshire.
The young left-hander is the son of former County captain Kevin, and brother of Surrey and England pair Sam and Tom. Curran made his domestic debut in the Steelbacks’ T20 Blast match against Derbyshire last week and has been signed by Northamptonshire on a two-year contract from the start of the next season.
Young Ben Curran starts off the right way
Expressing his elation at being selected for his English county side, Curran said, “I’m delighted to have signed for Northants. The fact that my Dad played here too it makes it even more special to be able to represent this County. I hope that I can contribute in all three formats over the next few years and fingers crossed we can have a strong end to the season in both the Blast and the County Championship.”
Junior Curran was born in Northampton in 1996. At this time, his late father was a key member of the NCCC squad. He went on to be educated, like his brothers, at Wellington College. From thereon, he was involved with the MCC Young Cricketers between 2015 and 2017, where he gained insights and experience.
It was in April this year when he impressed with a determined 80 for MCC YC against Northamptonshire’s second XI at High Wycombe. Subsequently, he got a chance with the County twos and scored 490 runs in six Championship matches, including centuries against Nottinghamshire and Worcestershire, to press his case for a contract.
Northants’ Head Coach, David Ripley commented on Curran’s appointment and said, “Ben has scored heavily in all formats for us in the 2’s as well as continuing to churn out runs for the MCCYC’s. He deserves an opportunity and we look forward to working with him over the next two seasons. He has a lot of competitive spirit and I know he will make the most of his chance. We are grateful to Steve Kirby and the YC’s for their cooperation in making this happen”.
