Hobart Hurricanes batsman Ben McDermott made his second appearance in the tournament this year during the clash on Thursday. Little did he know or the team management anticipated that the match will turn on its head kudos to McDermott’s efforts. A whirlwind ton from McDermott saw Hobart Hurricanes notch up an incredible win over the Melbourne Renegades.
The Renegades had set up a daunting target of 223 to win for the Hurricanes. Renegades posted 222/4 owing to the fifties from captain Aaron Finch and Tom Cooper. Chasing a mammoth target, the Hobart Hurricanes had the worst possible start. They lost their skipper and opener Tim Paine for a golden duck. In walked Ben McDermott to change the course of the innings. McDermott hit a blitzkrieg 114 runs of mere 52 deliveries.
His hundred had come up in just 47 balls – the third fastest in the history of the Big Bash League. The Hobart Hurricanes were eventually over the line in their stipulated 20 overs with two wickets to spare. It was only unfortunate for Ben McDermott to have not hit the winning runs. He was dismissed in the 16th over of the game.
En route his whirlwind knock, the batsman played a variety of shots all round the park. One such shot that captivated the fans was a reverse hit. It was in the 12th over of the innings when the action perspired. Melbourne Renegades bowler Sunil Narine came in to bowl the second delivery of the over.
Ben McDermott was on strike and had just notched up his fifty. He was batting on 54 off mere 34 balls. Narine bowled one on good length. McDermott took very little time to switch his stance and then pluck the ball from line on the leg stump to reverse hit over the third man. The ball raced away to the fence.
