The last season of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) was entertaining in many ways. It saw the return of 37-year-old Ravi Rampaul, who finished as the highest wicket-taker, and emergence of youngsters like Romario Shepherd, Odean Smith, Tim David, etc. All of these were not-so-popular names before CPL 9 but after their heroics in the tournament, they got the deserved attention.
As the upcoming season of CPL is round the corner, it is a good time to relish the action from last year. Thanks to Rario, the fans could buy special CPL moments from its marketplace. In this piece, we have made it a bit easier for fans by bringing out the toppest moments from CPL season 9 that you can soon get on Rario:
1. Sheldon Cottrell’s last-ball six
St Kitts and Nevis Patriots needed 10 runs off the final over while replying to the 161-run target set by Barbados Royals. Set batter Dominic Drakes and tail-ender Sheldon Cottrell were on strike; Ashley Nurse had the ball in hand. Drakes whacked the third ball of the over for a four and now the equation was: 5 runs in 3 balls.
Nurse bowled a quicker delivery to get rid of Drakes. Now, Naseem Shah, the number 10, walked out to bat. He somehow nudged it around for a single to get Cottrell back on strike with 4 needed off the last ball. Cottrell took a look around before settling in. As Nurse bowled it full outside off, he pounded hard on it for a flat six towards long-off boundary. It was followed by huge celebrations both inside the ground and in the stands.
2. Faf du Plessis’ first ton in CPL
Faf du Plessis has been around for a long time. Apart from leading South Africa in all the three formats, he has served a number of franchises in different leagues around the world. But surprisingly, Faf had no hundreds to his name in the franchise cricket till last year.
The opening batter, however, finally achieved the milestone in CPL 2021. In match 15th of the tournament, he fired a spectacular unbeaten ton against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots at Warner Park. He made 60-ball 120 runs to help his team St Lucia Kings post a comprehensive 100-run win.
3. David Wiese’s record five-wicket-haul
David Wiese started his international career by playing for South Africa back in 2013. However, three years later, in 2017, he made an exit from the South African cricket circuit to play county cricket. He continued to play franchise cricket before finally making a comeback to the international arena in 2021 by playing for Namibia.
He has produced many iconic moments both with the bat and ball for various franchises over the years. One of his most special moments came last year in CPL while playing for St Lucia Kings. The all-rounder picked a five-wicket-haul against Tribango Knight Riders, becoming the bowler with most fifers in T20 cricket.
4. Shoaib Malik’s spectacular boundary catch
Have you heard the term ‘evergreen’? If this term could in any way be associated with cricket, it has to be attached to Shoaib Malik. The Pakistan cricketer made his international debut long back in 1999 and he continues to play even now! Isn’t it amazing? If you thought it was enough, you are in for another shock. Malik, aged 40, is still as quick as one could be on the cricket field.
He keeps running around and pulling off some tremendous fielding efforts. Last year in CPL, Malik took a spectacular catch in the match between Barbados Royals and Guyana Amazon Warriors at Warner Park. He was fielding at mid-wicket boundary when Prince Charles slog-swept a full ball from Mohammed Hafeez. Malik jumped a bit and lost his balance but he showed great awareness by lobbing the ball up before clinging on to it when he got back on his feet.
5. Andre Russell’s 14-ball fifty
Andre Russell is a powerful cricketer, probably one of the most dangerous hitters of the cricket ball in the current era. In CPL 2021, the West Indies all-rounder looked in great form, especially in the match against St Lucia Kings at Warner Park.
He fired a 14-ball fifty to make the record for fastest fifty in CPL to his name. The big man reached to his fifty in style. He smocked a bouncer from Obed McCoy firing towards cow corner for a flat six. The fielder in the deep tried his best but couldn’t get his hands onto it. Russell celebrated the moment by raising his bat.
