Bhuvneshwar Kumar forayed into international cricket as an out-and-out swing bowler, which was his strength. However, in order to survive the rigours of international cricket, one has to be versatile and that’s exactly what was missing for the Uttar Pradesh fast-bowler. His weakness of bowling in the death overs came to the fore and he was subsequently dropped from the Indian squad.
However, he worked on his physical attributes and refurbished his skills and made his way back into the scheme of things. Currently, he is among the leading fast bowlers in the country and also an indispensable member of the national team owing to his variety of skills, especially in the limited overs formats where batsmen are wary of his resourceful bag of tricks to outclass them.
He is currently playing for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the eleventh edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) where he has already become the holder of the Purple Cap a couple of times over the past few years. Recently, the pacer spoke about the matured individual he has become and the add-ons, which he has made as his career has progressed.
“I am at the peak”- Bhuvneshwar Kumar
“I’ve always been able to swing it both ways. But I always wanted to add that pace, and I didn’t know how to. I worked with the trainers and the physios and what I’ve learnt is that it comes naturally with age and maturity. The pace I have now (is because) I am at the peak of my physical attributes right now. Everything comes from that physical maturity, it improved the pace a bit.” he was quoted as saying by wisden.com.
Being a strike bowler, one has to lead the bowling attack from the front, which sets the tone for the rest of the innings. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has played the role with expertise. Moreover, he hasn’t let his team and captain down, and has delivered in every situation. The cricketer also spoke about the responsibilities he has to shoulder in order to show consistency.
“The IPL has helped improve me as a bowler, especially in the death overs. It’s a short format, but a long season and two months is never easy to play. If we’ve to survive those two months, if you’ve to win the tournament, you’ve to do well – as a strike bowler, I really had to do well to ensure matches are won” he added.
