MS Dhoni and speculation of his retirement has been doing rounds ever since he was picked in the Indian squad for the ICC World Cup 2019. His performances in the tournament strengthened the possibility that the legend will sooner or later call it time on his illustrious career and make way for younger players to take over.
Dhoni has been the biggest name in Indian cricket after Sachin Tendulkar and some may argue that he has even transcended the great man in popularity given that his rise was parallel with the boom of social media and a legion of MSDians were created on the internet, which has given him a larger than life image. However, with his career winding down, people have got thinking what will Dhoni do after retiring and BJP leader Sanjay Paswan presented everyone with an answer.
Politics may be Dhoni’s new career after cricket
“On this issue, there has been a discussion for long, although this decision will be taken only after his retirement. Dhoni is my friend, he is a player of world fame and there have been discussions on bringing him into the party fold,” Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sanjay Paswan was quoted as saying by the Quint.
Dhoni was one of the celebrities who BJP chief Amit Shah visited in his “Sampark for Samarthan” program ahead of Lok Sabha elections. The BJP is also thinking of making Dhoni the contender for the chief minister post of Jharkhand, his home state which will go for polls later this year. His immense popularity in the state and his fandom is something that can help BJP win big in the elections.
Speaking of MS Dhoni’s performance in the ICC World Cup 2019, he scored 273 runs in 10 matches at an average of 45.50 with two half-centuries. He was a key figure in the Indian chase against New Zealand in the semi-final at Old Trafford, Manchester. His presence gave Jadeja confidence to go after the Kiwi bowlers and slam a quickfire 77. After he fell, Dhoni was the lone hope of more than a billion fans, but his run out at the hands of Martin Guptill sent New Zealand into the finals, as India lost by 18 runs in a heartbreaking result.
