India lost their semi-final match against New Zealand at the Old Trafford in Manchester by 18 runs and bowed out of the 2019 World Cup. The encounter was completed in two days after it went into the reserve day. After Black Caps won the toss and elected to bat first, they got to 211 in 46.1 overs after which the heavens opened up. The groundsmen worked hard but to no avail.
A chance of a curtailed game was on the cards, but that wasn’t required eventually. On the next day, the Kiwis got to a fighting 239 after skipper Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor’s hard-fought half-centuries. Thereafter, New Zealand bowlers gave the Indian batsmen nightmares. Matt Henry removed openers KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma and then Dinesh Karthik to jolt the Men in Blue.
Trent Boult got rid of the captain Virat Kohli to pile on India’s agony. Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant scored 32 each and gave their wickets to spinner Mitchell Santner in the quest to up the ante. Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni didn’t throw in the towel and stitched together a stand of 116 runs that well and truly brought India into the game. In the last five overs, India needed 52 runs.

Unfortunately, Jadeja got out to Boult for 77. However, Martin Guptill’s direct-hit to dismiss Dhoni drilled the final nail in India’s coffin. India was eventually bowled out even as the Black Caps made the finals for the second time in succession. Following the Men in Blue’s exit, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament (MP) Dr Subramanian Swamy has gone on to blame the ICC.
He felt the tournament could’ve been arranged better as it’s known that it rains during this time of the year in the United Kingdom. He didn’t mince any words in saying India would’ve won had the game not gone into the reserve day. The MP also took a jibe at the ICC Chairman, Shashank Manohar.
He took to Twitter and wrote, “Why should the ICC for cricket be located in London? The white man got rid of toughy Srinivasan and planted a boneless wonder Indian as Chairman. The UK is rain risk Had it not rained India would have won that same day,”
