Time to say Goodnight!

A rollercoaster ride ends here. India managed to beat Australia to start their World Cup 2023 campaign. What an innings that was from Virat Kohli and KL Rahul. Good start to the tournament. Alright, that's that then! Goodnight for today. See you all tomorrow.

Here's what Rohit Sharma said after the match!

"Pretty exciting. Good feeling to come out on top. It was a good game to start the tournament for us. I thought it was magnificent, especially the fielding and we saw the effort from everyone today, conditions like this it would be tough. Our bowlers used the conditions perfectly and we knew there would be assistance for everyone, even the seamers got some reverse, the spinners bowled in the nice areas and all in all it was a great effort. I was (nervous), you don't want to start your innings like that, credit to the Aussies bowlers as they bowled in good areas but some loose shots as well, when you have that kind of target you want to score as much as possible in the powerplay, but credit to Virat and KL on how they went about the chase. That is going to be the challenge for us as a team, moving to different conditions and adapting, whoever suits the conditions will have to come and do the job. Chennai never disappoints, they love their cricket and for them to sit in that heat and come out and cheer for the team says a lot," Rohit said.

Pat Cummins opens up after their defeat!

"At least 50 odd (short with the bat). It was tough, trying to defend anything under 200.. It was a really good bowling attack and their spinners made it tough work out there. I wasn't too upset (with just two spinners), we had 20 overs of spin but some more runs on the board would have made the difference. I have already forgotten about it (the drop catch), it happens, 4/10 would have been a dream start. He (Hazlewood) is class bowler and posses a lot of questions, stays in that area and was fantastic today. We have to review this one, absolutely a tough surface, but what if we are up against it then what to do we do differently. Just one game out of nine, not too much to ponder about but there are some areas we need to get better. No (would have change his toss decision)," Cummins said.

KL Rahul adjudged POTM

"(On walking out at 2/3) Quite honestly not a lot of conversation, I thought I’d get a good shower and get a break. I was just trying to get my breath back. Virat said there’s a bit in the wicket, so play like Test cricket for a while. There was a bit of help for the pacers with the new ball, and then the spinners also. In the last 15-20 overs, dew played a part and that helped quite a bit. The ball also skidded on better. However, it was a bit two-paced, it wasn’t the easiest of wickets to bat on and it wasn’t flat as well. It was a good cricket wicket, bit for the batters and the bowlers. That’s what you get in the south of India, especially Chennai. (On the last six) I hit it too well, I just calculated how to get to a 100 in the end. The only way for 4 and a six, but no qualms on not getting to that hundred," Rahul stated.

JUST IN- Shubman Gill has not travelled with Team India for the World Cup match against Australia today and hence has been ruled out of the first ODI World Cup 2023 game of the hosts.

India (IND) take the field for the first time in the ODI World Cup 2023 as they face Australia (AUS), who are the most successful team in the history of the competition with five titles, in Chennai on Sunday, October 8.

These two teams faced each other recently in a three-match ODI series in India last month. The Men in Blue won the first two matches to seal the series before Australia pulled one back in the final game. The scene is set for a new chapter to be written in the storied rivalry between two top teams in international cricket.

Ahead of the match, the two teams are fretting over the availability of two of their top players. While the young sensation Shubman is suffering from an illness, star all-rounder Marcus Stoinis is struggling with a hamstring niggle. The latter might just make it in time for the match, but the Punjab batter's chances of playing seem minimal. However, there is enough ammunition in both teams to form formidable playing XIs, and fans are expecting a thrilling affair.

For India, Shreyas Iyer scored a vital century in the second ODI against Australia, and that would have done his confidence a world of good. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ishan Kishan have also played some fantastic knocks in recent times. Suryakumar Yadav also registered back-to-back half-centuries against Australia, and if he gets an opportunity, he will be raring to go.

The pacers have been exceptional, with Mohammed Siraj picking up a six-for in the Asia Cup final and Mohammed Shami bagging a five-for in the first game against Australia. Jasprit Bumrah hasn't missed a step since returning from injury in the T20I series in Ireland. The spin-bowling department comprises the experienced duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin, who came into the side as a replacement for the injured Axar Patel. Kuldeep Yadav is the only wrist spinner, and he has been a thorn in the flesh for the Aussies, and his ten overs are going to be extremely crucial.

One of the biggest positives for Australia to come out of the series against India was the scintillating form of David Warner. He scored fifties in each of the three games and looked at consummate ease against all the Indian bowlers. Adam Zampa has a good record in Indian conditions and could play an important role at Chepauk, where a rank-turner is expected. The troika of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood will relentlessly ask some difficult questions, while all-rounders like Glenn Maxwell, Cameron Green, and Mitchell Marsh will also have to step in.

With a plethora of world-class players on both sides, the fans could potentially be in for a riveting affair on Sunday.
