In a career full of ups and downs, Steven Smith began as a wrist spinner and went on to become Australia's best Test batter since Sir Donald Bradman. However, his career was interrupted by the ball-tampering controversy that resulted in him losing his captaincy and receiving a 12-month ban.

After the controversy at Newlands in 2018, Smith's recovery was almost miraculous: in 2019, he made his Test cricket comeback with a 774-run Ashes series. As Smith's batting developed, his bowling became less frequently sighted. In the field, his athleticism and instincts stood out, even in a high-quality fielding side like Australia. Probably the best Test batter of the modern era, Smith has established his name as one of the all-time greats.
