The Bollywood actor and producer Arbaaz Khan, the brother of a superstar Salman Khan, was summoned by Thane Police on Friday for his alleged involvement in betting during the Indian Premier League (IPL). He has been accused of placing bets during the cash-rich T20 league through top bookies. One of the bookies, Sonu Jalan, was arrested by the Police who took his name in the scandal which shocked many. However, Neeraj Kumar, the former head of BCCI’s ACU, believed that the cricket isn’t affected with betting by any of the Bollywood personality.
Neeraj Kumar has recently retired from the helm after working with the Indian cricket board as the head of the Anit Corruption Unit for almost three years. Only on Thursday, he had come up with a statement that BCCI needs to take more stringent measures to avoid corruption and had also clarified that IPL is mostly corruption free after the tournament was a big hit this year.
It is just an offence
Neeraj Kumar believed that the game of cricket was clean and its reputation is not at all affected with betting by any Bollywood personality unless any cricketer is involved in it. “Cricket doesn’t get affected with any kind of betting by a Bollywood personality via a bookie until and unless a cricketer is approached. it is just an offence under gambling act,” he was quoted as saying by Business Standard.
However, the BCCI has already cleared that they will await the police investigation on the matter and then will decide if any needs to be taken. “Police are investigating the case and it is too premature for us to say,” Ajit Singh of BCCI’s Anti-corruption Unit told Times Now. Moreover, it has been reported that Arbaaz Khan has lost a whopping amount of Rs 2.8 Crores while placing the bets and there was a conflict between him and bookie at the Police Station.
