India was a brute force in the main round of the 2019 World Cup in England and Wales. The Men in Blue started with a thunderous six-wicket victory against South Africa at the Rose Bowl in Southampton. Virat Kohli and Co didn’t look back from thereon and kept on outdrawing one and all, who stumbled on to their path. India went six matches in the league stage without a defeat.
Their dream-run was ended by England at the Edgbaston in Birmingham. Eoin Morgan and Co beat them by 31 runs. However, India came back with all their might and took down Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in Birmingham and Leeds respectively. To add to their delight, Virat’s men also managed to top the table. One of their matches against New Zealand in Nottingham got abandoned.
India bows out of the 2019 World Cup
Being in prime form, many experts and pundits also believed that India has the potential to go on and win the championship as well. Prior to their semi-final match against the Black Caps at the Old Trafford in Manchester, the Men in Blue were deemed to be the firm favourites. But the Kiwis, led by Kane Williamson, ended their campaign, slapping them with an 18-run defeat.
After being put in to bowl first, India did a wonderful job, restricting their opponent to 239 with the match going into the reserve day due to rain. Ross Taylor and Captain Kane scored half-centuries and for India, Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the most successful with three wickets. India got off to a poor start as Rohit Sharma, Kohli and KL Rahul could score one each with the score at 5/3 in a mere 3.1 overs.
Thereafter, Ravindra Jadeja (77) and MS Dhoni (50) tried their best to pull back proceedings for India. Hardik Pandya (32) and Rishabh (32) got starts, but couldn’t convert them. The Men in Blue were bowled out for 49.3 overs. In the meantime, the Indian film industry heaped praises on the players. The actors and actresses were disappointed, but also proud of the way Team India entertained one and all.
Here is how the Indian film fraternity reacted:
