England and New Zealand played the greatest ever ODI at Lord’s on Sunday. No team deserved to lose but there had to be one winner and the 2019 World Cup hosts won the trophy for the first time. England had hit more boundaries when they batted and by the virtue of that rule, New Zealand came second. While there was elation in once camp, it was a complete heartbreak in the other. The fans had witnessed the greatest ever match and even the Bollywood celebrities were awestruck after watching the drama unfold at the home of cricket.
To start with the match, Kane Williamson won the toss and opted to bat first which was a brave decision on a green pitch. Their openers survived for the first six overs before Chris Woakes pinned Martin Guptill in front of the stumps. The run-scoring was difficult throughout the innings on a tough surface and England too bowled superbly. They restricted the Kiwis to 241 runs for the loss of eight wickets after 50 overs.
Thrilling chase
In the second innings, New Zealand made the ball talk to reduce England to 86/4 with some brilliant bowling and fielding. Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler then staged a stunning fightback with a partnership to take the game close. But the latter holed out at a crucial stage and the wickets fell in quick succession. However, Stokes had other ideas and was determined to win it for England.
New Zealand weren’t giving it up either and despite luck deserting them, the BlackCaps held the hosts for a tie and the game went into the super over. Well, the two teams couldn’t be separated in the super over either and England were crowned only on the basis of more boundary count. There were some dramatic scenes on the ground as the England players started celebrating after Martin Guptill was run-out off the last ball of the super over.
New Zealand players, on the other hand, were in disbelief and wondered where it went wrong for them in the game of small margins. Both the teams had their moments in the game and literally had given the fans across the world a game to remember forever.
No wonder even the Bollywood celebrities were in awe of both the sides. But most of them sympathised for New Zealand and especially Kane Williamson who earned a lot of respect for the way they held themselves even in the defeat.
Here’s how Bollywood reacted:
Still reeling from the sensational Sunday. What a day for sport it was. Even though both the people I was supporting didn’t come through. #CricketWorldCupFinal #Wimbledon2019

I was not supporting either. Just watched a great match. And at the end just felt for the kiwis. England played amazing cricket. But so did the kiwis. They didn’t deserve to be second. No way.

This World Cup should have been shared. If England got more boundaries. New Zealand took more wickets. So the criteria is absurd. All 22 of those boys gave their everything and no one was lesser. Then why do only 11 get to feel like they were the best.

Who makes up these absurd rules?!?
More boundaries scored in the game has u win?!?
Why can’t you just have another super over?
Ridiculous from the @ICCSorry @BLACKCAPS u just got mugged in London
Just awful#ENGVSNZL— atul kasbekar (@atulkasbekar) July 14, 2019
You couldn’t script a match like last night’s World Cup Final – both the teams played their hearts out and it came down to bizarre rules, a super over and the very last ball! Congratulations team England on a historic World Cup victory at home! #WorldCup2019

Instead of changing @msdhoni gloves , the stupid @ICC should have changed their super over rules !!!!

And just for cheap thrills, imagine if the same final – like exact same script and flow of events – was played between India and Pakistan today.
The space-time continuum would have ruptured. #CWC19

Honestly speaking @ICC has made cricket such a batsmen game and wickets really don’t matter. Its all about the batsmen scores & the wickets are treated like the lower caste. If there was equality between bowling and batting .. New Zealand would be a winner today @cricketworldcup

England had a better kundli! NZ had the better game!!! #NZLvENG

— Sidharth Malhotra (@SidMalhotra) July 14, 2019
If in a super over a country can win by the virtue of more boundaries then why can a country not win by the virtue of losing lesser wickets in the actual match? There is a serious problem with the your rules @ICC @cricketworldcup
