Bowlers who have dismissed all 11 batsmen in a Test match
1. Jim Laker v Australia, 1956:
On 31st July 1956 in Old Trafford, Manchester, Australia sunk into defeat helplessly against England. Off-spinner Jim Laker rattled their traditional rivals with his classic spell of spin bowling, taking a mind-boggling 19 wickets for just 90. The 4th of the 1956 Ashes series is more famously remembered as the ‘Laker’s Test’.
No bowler before had done something that spectacular in the game’s history and only one (Anil Kumble) thereafter has managed to do so at the international level. The self-taught bowler who learned the art during his time in the army, Laker skittled out Australians for scores of 80 & 205 with the help of his 9/37 & 10/53 respectively to give England a huge win by an innings and 170 runs.
He could have made it perfect 10 in the first innings if his compatriot, left-arm spinner Tony Lock had not scalped opener Jim Burke. None of the Australian could pick his loopy off-breaks and straighter ones (5 of his wickets came off this ball) and surrendered one by one to him. It was by every standard, a classic exhibition of spin bowling which will be etched in everyone’s memories forever.
