The Cumilla Warriors ceased their four-match losing streak in the BPL 2019-20, beating the Chattogram Challengers by three wickets. Placed fifth in the points table, the Warriors can’t afford to drop many games if they are to qualify for the playoffs. Their next match is against the Sylhet Thunder in the second of Thursday’s doubleheader at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.

The Thunder are the cellar dwellers, having lost seven out of their eight matches. But Mosaddek Hossain’s men will be looking to gain some momentum in home conditions. The Thunder are in with a glimmer of a hope and another defeat will officially knock them out of the tournament. The Thunder lost to the Rangpur Rangers by seven wickets after Cameron Delport took them apart.

Pitch and Conditions

In the last BPL, the pitch in Sylhet produced some low-scoring affairs. But later on, some massive scores were put up by the teams. Also being the night game, dew is likely to make batting a tad easier, especially in the second half. Hence, batting second seems to be a wise move. The temperature will be around the 9 degrees Celsius mark with 17 per cent dew around.

The Thunders’ batting has a lot of firepower. Andre Fletcher and Johnson Charles are leading the run-charts. Mohammad Mithun got a fifty last time and the knock will keep him in good stead. Sherfane Rutherford has threatened with big shots, but he is yet to play a knock of substance.

Mosaddek’s role will also be of prime importance. Naveen-ul-Haq and Ebadot Hossain has been their key performers with economy rates under seven. Sohag Gazi and Nayeem Hasan have been reasonable, but need to be more penetrative. Rutherford can also roll his arms over to good effect.

Dawid Malan didn’t collect his Man of the Match award as had a catch to flight soon after. His went to attend his ill wife and it was confirmed by the Warriors’ technical advisor Minhajul Abedin Nannu. If Malan doesn’t make the cut for the next game, Cumilla need to find a new skipper for the game.

The batting will also be weakened since Malan has over 300 runs to show for his efforts. Stiaan van Zyl showing some good form is a positive sign for the Warriors. Soumya Sarkar is in decent form, both with bat and ball. Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Sunzamul Islam will hold the key on slow decks.
