BPL 2019: Comical misunderstanding ends David Warner's promising knock on debut
He was involved in an ugly mix-up with his partner Towhid Hridoy.
David Warner could not have asked for a worse start to his career in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) than getting run-out for just 14. The disgraced Australian, who is currently serving the ban imposed on him for his involvement in the ball-tampering scandal, was roped in by Sylhet Sixers and was given the responsibility to lead the side. But his captaincy career in Bangladesh is off to an inauspicious start.
Warner looked in his elements from the start and had already hit three boundaries in his short stay against Comilla Victorians before his joy was cut short by an unfortunate misunderstanding. The incident happened in the fifth over of the innings when the flamboyant left-hander was standing on the non-striker’s end. His batting partner Towhid Hridoy flicked a Shoaib Malik delivery towards square leg. And as soon as the ball was hit, David Warner set off for the single. But before he could realise anything, the damage was already done.
Warner had already reached the other end of the crease while Hridoy was unmoved. In the meantime, Mohammad Shahid had thrown the ball to Malik who did the rest. A dejected Warner then waited a little for the final decision before walking off disappointed.
Here’s the video:
Warner’s team, meanwhile, could not recover from the early jolt and could only manage to post a modest 127 for 8 in the allotted 20 overs. Nicholas Pooran was the top-scorer for the Sixers, scoring 41 off 26.
Warner on his chances of returning to national team:
David Warner, meanwhile, will be in a race against time to seal his spot in Australia‘s team for the World Cup.The World Cup will get underway just a couple of months after his ban ends in March this year. However, Warner is hopeful that good news will come his way if he keeps on scoring in T20 leagues.
“It is up to the selectors whether or not they want to pick me. At the end of the day, all I can do is score runs in this tournament and the IPL, keep putting my hand up and making sure that I am the best person I can be,” ESPNcricinfo quoted Warner as saying.
