BPL 2019: David Warner changing stance was within the laws, states MCC
Warner would only play the next two matches for the Sixers.
David Warner is currently leading Sylhet Sixers in the ongoing edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). His team hasn’t had the best of times, but yesterday, managed to turn its fortunes around and beat Rangpur Riders in Sylhet by 27 runs. During the course of the match, the 32-year-old Warner did something unfathomable, which took the cricketing fraternity by surprise.
During Sylhet’s innings, he took a stance with a left-hander’s grip and smacked off-spinner Chris Gayle for 6,4 and 4 in consecutive balls. In the first three balls of the 19th over, Warner couldn’t get hold of the Windies’ tweaker and the move worked wonders for him. He was batting on 47 from 32 balls and went on to score his maiden BPL half-century to remain not out on 61 from 35 balls.
Warner didn’t breach the laws
In the meantime, Marylebone Cricket Club, guardians of the laws of cricket, reckons Warner was within the laws while resorting to the antics. “MCC has reviewed the footage of David Warner switching to batting right-handed in the Bangladesh Premier League match yesterday and feels that his actions were within the Laws of Cricket,” MCC was quoted as saying in ESPNcricinfo.
“The Laws do not state that a batsman can bat only in one way and, from the footage seen, it seems clear that Warner made it obvious that he was changing to batting right-handed. The bowler, Chris Gayle, altered the field accordingly and everyone seemed to know what was happening.”
As far as the Sixers are concerned, they are currently languishing at the bottom half of the points table with two wins from five matches. Warner would be playing the next two matches against Dhaka Dynamites and Rangpur and then would be returning to Australia owing to an elbow injury. English cricketer Jason Roy is slated to replace him for the remaining matches.
