BPL 2019: David Warner set to return home due to injury
Smith has already been ruled out of the action and will potentially not play any ODI before the World Cup.
Things hardly seem to be going David Warner’s way as he became the latest victim of an injury. Just like his mate Steve Smith, the former Australian vice-captain injured his elbow while playing the BPL game. David Warner will fly back to Australia on January 21 and will be assessed then after which the extent of his injury will be known. However, the Sylhet Sixers’ skipper will play two matches on January 18 and 19 and then will miss the remaining five matches of his team.
The left-hander sustained this damage while playing the game against the Rangpur Riders. He did not open the innings and instead came to bat at number three in the game. The 32-year-old was a brilliant act on the field as he clubbed an unbeaten 36-ball 61 in the game.
This innings, along with a 43-ball 70 from Liton Das, helped the Sixers register their second win of the tournament. David Warner was just as brilliant with his captaincy tactics which were great to watch. He also smashed Chris Gayle for 14 runs in only three balls by turning right-handed in the middle of the innings.
Ruled out of the World Cup 2019?
The Sylhet Sixers are yet to confirm the severity of the injury. However, according to Cricket Australia, the left-hander will return home shortly and then will go under the knife in the coming days. This injury should keep David Warner out of action for close to six weeks meaning he is still in line to return for Australia’s ODI series against Pakistan soon after his ban ends.
However, he will fall short of match practice significantly as he nears making an international return. Warner’s ban will be lifted on 29 March 2019 and he might take part in the IPL and the ODI series against Pakistan that could take place in March/April.
This news surfaced just five days after the former Aussie skipper Smith was ruled out of the BPL. Smith also sustained an elbow injury and successfully underwent surgery. He will be in a brace for about six weeks before he fully recovers. Australia will play their first World Cup match against Afghanistan on 1 June 2019.
