Banned Australian opener David Warner is just a few months away from making his comeback into the national team. His ban period will end on 29 March 2019 and is expected to play a critical role for Australia in World Cup 2019. Preparations are in full swing for the comeback and he was also spotted practising in the Aussie nets in Sydney recently.

The 32-year-old will first play the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2019. The Sylhet Sixers signed him in October this year. Warner was expected to play a big role for the side with the bat. However, it seems that his responsibility increases manifold now with him being the leader of the side as well. He will be replacing the Bangladeshi all-rounder Nasir Hossain as the captain of the team.

A decision that was well thought about

The decision to name David Warner as the skipper came after many discussions and deliberations. It is learnt that the franchise owners have unanimously agreed to change the captain for the upcoming season. Apparently, the think tank wanted a more experienced player at the helm as they believe that the tournament will be a highly competitive one this year. Also, they hope that the team will be benefitted under Warner’s leadership.

“This year it would going to be a highly competitive season. We want to fully employ the experience and ability of a skilled performer like Warner. Hope the team will be benefitted,” Sylhet Sixers’ Chief Executive Officer Yasir Obaed said as quoted by Prothom Alo.

“Warner has the experience of playing in mega-franchise Twenty20 leagues around the globe. Sunrisers Hyderabad won the Indian Premier League title in 2016 under Warner’s captaincy which is a definitive reason behind selecting him as the captain of Sylhet Sixers,” he further added.

Sylhet Sixers will start their BPL mission on 6th of January with the match against Comilla Victorians.
