The next season of Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) will take place either from 4 or 5 January 2019. The lone franchise-based Twenty20 tournament of the country was initially scheduled to be staged in November this year, but for the national parliamentary election in December, BPL authority was bound to reschedule the premium event to coming January.
The players’ draft of this year’s BPL will be held on 25 October. The tournament authorities are busy finalising the list of players who are willing to take part in the event before the player draft takes place. A total of six categories will be available for the players, and those are A+, A, B, C, D and E.
In the previous edition of the T20 event, there was a category called ‘Icon’, which included the highest paid players. But this time around, BPL governing council has done away with the icon category and decided to replace that with ‘A+’ category.
Sabbir and Soumya lost their place from A+ category
The right-handed batsman Sabbir Rahman and the southpaw Soumya Sarkar have been omitted from the list of the players who will see their names in the A+ category in the player draft. Ismail Haider the secretary of BPL governing council revealed it to media.
Sabbir was in lean form before being punished for abusing a fan on social media. He is now out of international cricket for six months. And, Soumya Sarkar is also going through a bad patch of his career. Despite starting his international run with some significant performances, he failed to maintain it for a long time, and thus he lost his place from the Bangladesh team.
In the last BPL Sabbir was the icon player of Sylhet Sixers. But he failed to maintain a performance of an iconic player while managing only 211 runs at an average of 23.44. His best performance was scoring only a fifty. Despite playing 11 matches, Sabbir was unable to register even a single match-winning knock.
On the other hand, Soumya was the icon of Chittagong Vikings. His performance was worse than Sabbir as his total score was less than 200 runs. Playing all 11 matches for Chittagong Vikings, he managed to gather only 169 runs at an average of 15.36.
