Brad Hogg, the former Australian cricketer, has taken some time out to make a research of the bowlers in the cash-rich and prestigious Indian Premier League (IPL). The veteran, who once plied his trade for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) made his picks of the best bowlers in the powerplay. To start with, he went for Zaheer Khan, saying that he had both seam and swing up his sleeves.
As per Hogg, Zaheer’s cutters also made life tough for the batsmen. Hogg then went for Munaf Patel, who he reckons used to bowl a heavy ball. Hogg also lauded Munaf for hitting the right channels in the initial overs. Morne Morkel, the former South Africa bowler, was Hogg’s next pick. Speaking about the lanky pacer, Hogg said that the extra bounce due to his height worked in his favour.
Brad Hogg picks three spinners
Shane Watson was the last fast bowler he picked. Brad reckoned that Watson’s pace along with seam movement made him an effective prospect. In the spinner’s category, he picked Sunil Narine, Harbhajan Singh and Ravi Ashwin. About Narine, Hogg said that the West Indies spinner has the potential to spin the leather both ways, apart from possessing a deadly straightener.
Narine is one of the leading wicket-takers in the IPL, having plied his trade in the Knight Riders. He has been effective to such an extent that KKR hasn’t thought of releasing him. Harbhajan has been playing in the IPL since the inaugural edition. Speaking on him, Hogg said that his deliveries skid on and then he slows things up, creating some doubts in the minds of the batsmen.
After playing 10 seasons for the Mumbai Indians, Harbhajan moved to the Chennai Super Kings. Ashwin has been pretty economical. He used to play for the Super Kings after which he represented as many as three franchises. Ashwin is currently a part of the Delhi Capitals. Hogg feels that he gets he has good straightener in addition to his off-breaks.
