Brad Hogg was a piece of piss, hard to understand why batsmen couldn’t pick his wrong’un: Ian Chappell
Chappell, once, had a chance of facing Hogg in the nets.
Ian Chappell, the former Australian batsman, once got the chance of facing Brad Hogg in the nets. However, he didn’t face much of a challenge and played out the leg-spinner without much fuss. He was having a net session with spin wizard Shane Warne after which he decided to face Hogg.
The 76-year-old Chappell “wanted to face him, just to see what he was like”. Hogg came in the middle of a session and bowled to Chappell as well. After the session, Chappell found it tough to fathom the reason behind people not being able to pick the leg-spinner’s googly.
I cover drove Hoggy a couple of times: Ian Chappell
“He [Warne] had been bowling for a couple of minutes, and suddenly Brad Hogg appears from somewhere, I don’t know where he came from,” Chappell was quoted a saying speaking on the podcast ‘Time to Talk’ with Sean Sennett.
“Brad Hogg was a piece of piss, even [when I was] at 52. I mean, why the hell people can’t pick his wrong’un is beyond me. You’re obviously not looking at the right place! I cover drove Hoggy a couple of times …” he added.
Hogg didn’t get to play a whole lot of matches in his career as Warne was on top of his game. The now 49-year-old ended up playing seven Tests, 123 ODIs and 15 T20Is in which he picked up a combined tally of 180 wickets. He made his debut against Zimbabwe in Colombo in 1996.
His last match for the Aussies was against Pakistan in the 2014 T20 World Cup in Bangladesh. At that time, he was well above 40. Even at the age of 47, the tweaker went on to ply his trade for the Melbourne Renegades in the 2017-18 edition of the Big Bash League (BBL).
In the IPL, he played for the Rajasthan Royals and the Kolkata Knight Riders. In 21 games, the left-armer got up 23 wickets. With the bat in hand, Hogg was no mug either, having scored three fifties. If Australia didn’t have Warne in their team, it could be said that Hogg would have played a lot more.
