There’s absolutely no doubt in the fact that Brendon McCullum was one of the linchpins of New Zealand cricket and after he retired in 2016, a massive void was left in the national team. He didn’t nurture any inhibitions while batting and was known for his fearless approach. He bowed out from the highest level with the fastest ever Test century against Australia in Christchurch.
He also captained the Black Caps to the final of the World Cup in 2015 against the Aussies at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) Thereafter, he only plies his trade in various domestic T20 tournaments across the globe. At the age of 37, the swashbuckling batsman hasn’t got much cricket left ahead of him, albeit he hasn’t run out of steam by any stretch of the imagination.
Recently, the experienced campaigner confirmed that the current year would mark the end of his playing career. However, he plays to stay connected to the game by taking up some coaching and commentary stints as and when the opportunity comes.
I’ll look to make that transition
“I’m a fan of New Zealand cricket, now. At some point, I’ll enter some commentary and coaching as well. And this year will be my last year of actually playing. I’ve got a couple of leagues which I’ve already got contracts for which I’ll fulfil but then I’ll look to make that transition and just sit back and watch the Black Caps play,” McCullum was quoted as saying to The Herald.
The recent times haven’t given McCullum much to cheer about as far as his cricketing career is concerned. He wasn’t retained by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Lahore Qalandars (LQ) to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Pakistan Super League (PSL) respectively. The veteran also played his last match in the Big Bash League (BBL), representing Brisbane Heat.
McCullum is most likely to play in the upcoming edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) where he plies his trade for the Dwayne Bravo-captained Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR), which is the only team to win the championship on back-to-back instances.
