Brendon McCullum picks Afghanistan's next big superstar

The 2018 edition of the Afghanistan Premier League has managed to scale up big time in terms of reputation. The ongoing season has undoubtedly turned out to be an exciting one in terms of the big names participating in it and the coverage it has managed to garner thus far. Among the many big names gracing the tournament, this season is former New Zealand cricketer Brendon McCullum.

McCullum has been a globetrotter in the T20 leagues. He has largely failed to make an impact in the APL 2018 for the Kandahar Knights though. However, the team does hope to see the swashbuckling cricketer get back to his best sometime soon in the competition. Recently, he spoke about the various prospects of his side in the tournament.

When asked to pick the highlights of the season, the former cricketer remarked that his teammate Karum Janat is one of the top performers of the season thus far. Janat, who is the younger brother of Afghanistan cricketer Asghar Afghan, has scored with an average of almost 32 this season and has bagged 9 wickets with an average of 15.44.

“Young (Karim) Janat, his performance in this tournament has really caught my eye. I think he’s a superstar in the making as well. Obviously there’s a lot of other very good players out there,” McCullum quoted.

‘Still in with a chance’

Commenting on the team’s performance, Bazz noted that they still are in with a chance. Kandahar Knights are currently placed at the bottom of the points table and need to win their final two league games to stay in the race for the semis. McCullum is certainly very optimistic about the team’s chances.

“We haven’t won as many games as we’d have liked but we still have a chance in this tournament. If you qualify for the semi-finals, you’re only two wins away from winning it. We still firmly believe we can do that. If we win our two games, our run-rate is pretty good. Even if Nangarhar go on to win their games, they’d have to win it handsomely if we were to win our two because our run-rate is pretty solid. We know we are in the tournament,” remarked the former Kiwi cricketer.

“We just have to keep believing. We know that we have a good squad and if certain players can stand up at certain times in the last couple of games, we will give ourselves a chance,” he added further.
