Brendon McCullum pokes fun at David Warner for his century celebration
Warner scored an unbeaten 155 for his club.
Banned Australian opening batsman David Warner has struck form with the bat in Sydney grade cricket. The left-hander celebrated with his typical leap and pump after he got to a century for Randwick-Petersham. However, former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum chanced upon Warner to gently remind him that after all it was just his achievement in grade cricket which was being played at the Coogee Oval.
David Warner is currently serving a year-long ban imposed by Cricket Australia (CA) for his involvement in the ball-tampering scandal earlier this year. Warner and captain Steve Smith were handed one-year bans, while opener Cameron Bancroft was suspended for nine months. The left-handed cricketer’s relationship with his teammates had also taken a toll, but since his tearful apology to the press, things seemed to have improved slightly. Members within the Australian management also want to see him back into the mix of things for Australia.
‘Geez Davey!’ says McCullum
Former Blackcaps opener and skipper Brendon McCullum took to Twitter to pass a humorous remark at Warner’s flamboyant celebration. He tweeted, “Geez Davey! This celebration is the equivalent of Sir Ed Hillary giving it large climbing his front steps, post-Everest! Hahaha. Or in horse racing parlance, it’s similar to if @HugeBowman was to give it “she’s apples” in a maiden midweek at Wyong! Ahahahaha.”
McCullum compared Warner’s celebrations to Hugh Bowman – the jockey who rides wonder mare Winx – who was very excited after having won a maiden race at a country meeting. He indeed batted well and ended on an unbeaten 155 for his club Randwick-Petersham on Saturday.
The explosive left-hander is likely to miss out on the important series against India which begins in November this year. India are scheduled to play 3 T20Is, 4 Test matches and 3 ODIs Down Under.
