Trinbago Knight Riders’ Carribean Premier League campaign got off to a flyer thanks to New Zealand power hitter Brendon McCullum. The right handed genius went berserk with the bat as he combined with fellow Kiwi Colin Munro to ride his team to victory. McCullum was undoubtedly a star of the show as he dispatched 7 maximums in his inning of 58 runs from just 27 balls.
The six:
However, one out of those 7 sixes was an extraordinary one which came off a Jerome Taylor delivery. McCullum pulled off an AB de Villiers at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium at St. Lucia. The batsman showed and incredible combination of technique and skill as he used the pace of a pitched up Jerome Taylor delivery to scoop it over his head and the wicketkeeper for a six. McCullum got down on his knees and gave us a reminder of ‘Superman’ AB de Villiers or the famous ‘Dilscoop’ invented by Tillakaratne Dilshan.
It was not a bad delivery from the West Indian speedster but Brendon McCullum turned out to be too good for him. Colin Munro provided great support to the Kiwi as he remained not out on 66 from 39 deliveries. Pinch hitter Sunil Narine opened the inning with Brendon, as he did in the Indian Premier League. But after the gamble failed miserably, McCullum and Munro took it upon themselves to chase down the small total of 133 runs.
Batting first, the St. Lucia Stars were not impressive with the bat as they managed to score only 132 runs at the loss of 9 wickets in their 20 overs. Big names like Johnson Charles, Jesse Ryder, Marlon Samuels and Darren Sammy failed to perform with the bat in a dismal performance altogether. This was the opening match of the fifth season of the Carribean Premier League and there is much more to follow.
