Brian Lara loves the amazing batting ability of two modern day cricketers
He also felt that the level of the game has improved a lot over the years.
Brian Lara, during his heydays, made bowlers toil for a long time to pick his wickets. The Caribbean batting star has a record of scoring 400 runs in an inning in Test and is still untouched. He ended his career with more than 22,000 international runs to his name and also has a high-score of 501* in first-class cricket. However, the man himself, Lara, has picked AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli as two of the best modern-day cricketers and feels that they have maintained the high standard of the game.
Lara lauded the ability of both the batsmen to keep the opposition at bay when they are batting. While Kohli recently amassed close to 600 runs in five Test matches in England where all other batters struggled, De Villiers has fastest ODI hundred to his name and used to smash all the bowlers out of the park during his recently concluded international career.
You’ve just got to appreciate them
“These sort of players (Virat Kohli and De Villiers) that are around today, they have an amazing ability and can do things with the bat that we weren’t even thinking about back in the day. You’ve just got to appreciate (what we’re seeing from the best players now),” he added. “They’re bringing the sponsors and people through the gates, and the level of the game has kept on rising,” Brian Lara was quoted as saying by Sport 360.
He also went on say that the level of cricket has rather improved and the batsmen of this era have made it possible through some brilliant hitting. He also highlighted their ability to adapt to all the formats of the game quickly which was tough earlier.
“A lot of people say that the level of the game has dropped (because of too much cricket and meaningless series) but I believe it has maintained the standard and gone even higher. To see better cricketers on show is just amazing and that has been the trend. I actually believe there are greater opportunities now for batsmen to go past all the records that are standing because the way they are now batting. They are versatile and good enough to play all formats,” the 49-year-old added.
