Australian batsman Cameron Bancroft dropped a bombshell recently by making a massive statement on the infamous sandpaper gate scandal. Bancroft, who faced a nine-month ban for tampering the ball during the 2018 Cape Town Test, hinted that Australian bowlers were aware of the happening. Reacting to Bancroft’s remarks, former Australia bowling coach David Saker opined that the finger-pointing will be continued regardless of how much investigation is done over the matter.

Saker was Australia’s bowling coach at the time of the ball-tampering scandal. In a recent interaction, he was asked to throw some light on the episode and the former bowler made some interesting comments. Saker didn’t specify who he thought was involved but said the saga is likely to hover around Australian cricket for years, much like Trevor Chappell’s underarm ball against New Zealand in 1981.

“Obviously a lot of things went wrong at that time. The finger-pointing is going to go on and on and on. There was a lot of people to blame. It could have been me to blame, it could have been someone else. It could have been stopped and it wasn’t, which is unfortunate,” Saker told The Age and Sydney Morning Herald on Sunday.

Saker further opined that Cameron made the statement to reduce the mental burden on him. He even believes that many more sensational comments on the episode will come in the future. “Cameron’s a very nice guy. He’s just doing it to get something off his chest … He’s not going to be the last,” Saker opined.

Meanwhile, Cricket Australia said that they are open to reinvestigate the matter if anyone comes up with new information. “CA has maintained all along that if anyone is in possession of new information in regards to the Cape Town Test of 2018 they should come forward and present it,” CA said in the statement following Bancroft’s interview.

For the unversed, Bancroft was found guilty of rubbing the ball with sandpaper during the Test and was subsequently banned. The then Aussie skipper Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner also accepted their involvement in the matter and subsequently faced a one-year ban. The duo even lost their leadership roles but successfully made comebacks in the national team. However, Bancroft has fallen out of the selectors’ radar.
