The Test series between South Africa and Australia that was played earlier this year sparked several controversies. Not only the players, but also their families were affected during the series. The ball-tampering scandal added fuel to fire and suddenly cricket took backseat and scandals took the centre stage. The integrity of the game was questioned as fans felt that the series was not played in the right spirit. Winning or losing must be secondary as upholding the spirit of the game must be the top priority for the players.
David Warner and his family were severely affected after the conclusion of the controversial series. Warner played a key role in the ball tampering scandal which saw him being suspended for 12 months. His Wife, Candice Warner too was not spared during the series as spectators were seen sporting masks of Sonny Bill Williams in the stadium.
Torrid times for the Warner family
Candice apologized to Sonny after their 2007 “toilet tryst” resurfaced in the South Africa vs Australia series. The tryst took place between Candice and Williams 11 years ago in the toilet cubicle of a Sydney pub. The incident happened before they had even met their spouses. Cricket South Africa issued an apology to Candice Warner for the taunts during the series and the latter extended the sentiment to Williams and his family.
“I’d like to extend that apology to Sonny Bill. He’s a husband and father, so imagine how his wife would feel and his kids.” Candice said in the Australian Women’s Weekly interview. Ms Warner also suffered a miscarriage in the aftermath of her husband’s role in the ball-tampering scandal. It is heartbreaking to see David Warner, one of the finest cricketers of Australia and his family go through such difficult times.
“The miscarriage was a heartbreaking end to a horror tour. The ordeal from the public humiliations to the ball-tampering had taken its toll and, from that moment, we decided nothing will impact our lives like that again.” added Candice. It is going to be very difficult for Warner to make a comeback into the national side and regain the lost faith.
