The BCCI recently announced the Indian squad for the limited overs series against Sri Lanka. One of the key decisions that the board made was to rest the Indian skipper Virat Kohli. This was a result of Kohli’s recent comments on the packed Indian schedule. The Indian cricketers have been playing non-stop cricket since the IPL this year. This has left them with only a couple of days rest after the conclusion of the Sri Lanka series to head to South Africa for their next assignment.

The head of the Committee of Administrators (CoA), Vinod Rai, empathized with Virat Kohli recently. He noted that the board cannot kill their ‘golden goose’ for the sake of generating more revenues. He assured that the playing days will reduce significantly in the coming seasons. The board is keen on discussing the same in their meetings.

“We can’t be killing the golden goose for the sake of revenue. That is why the players would be given a detailed presentation during the Delhi Test match [starting December 2], where their opinion will be taken into consideration by the BCCI. We will discuss the FTP with the team. We are taking a 360 degree view of the situation before deciding on the FTP. The burnout of players is a serious issue,” quoted Vinod Rai.

Only two days of rest

Commenting further on the same note, Vinod Rai remarked that the Indian team has only two days of rest after the Sri Lanka series. Moreover, they will start playing the South Africa series without a warm up game. This, certainly, shows that the schedule has been prepared very inefficiently.

“The fact that the Indian team would have only two days of rest before flying out for the South African series and start playing there without warm-up game shows that something isn’t right about the schedule,” he added.
