Glenn Maxwell, the Australian cricketer, entered the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction at a base price of INR 2 crores. He had a horrendous campaign in 2020 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) where he couldn’t hit a single six. He couldn’t perform to the expectations and hence, Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), captained by KL Rahul, released the Victorian of his services.
However, after he returned to play for the Aussies, he played his shots freely and India had to bear the brunt of his brutal power-hitting. In the auction, Maxwell was again expected to wreak havoc and he didn’t disappoint. Rajasthan Royals (RR) and the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) started the bidding, but they dropped in the towel after Maxwell’s price went up to INR 4.20 crores.

Thereafter, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) went berserk to get the Victorian in their ranks. From there, both teams kept raising their hands to bag Maxwell. In the end, after a lot of excitement, the Super Kings dropped in the towel and Virat Kohli’s Challengers bagged him at a massive price of INR 14.25 crores.
After getting picked, Maxwell dropped in a tweet, showing his excitement to play for Kohli and Co. He took to Twitter and wrote, “Looking forward to joining @RCBTweets for this years @IPL Can’t wait to put everything I have in to helping us lift the trophy!”

Earlier, Gautam Gambhir, the former Indian cricketer, predicted that the Challengers could go for Maxwell in order to take the pressure off Kohli and AB de Villiers. He also felt that Maxwell could be a handy addition, keeping in mind the pitches in Bangalore.
“Probably, they (RCB) will look at someone like Glenn Maxwell because they need to take a lot of pressure out of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers,” Gambhir was quoted as saying on Star Sports show ‘Cricket Connected – Auction Special’.
“You want someone like an X-factor, like Maxwell, and at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, where it’s flat and small, so he can have that impact. So, probably, they (RCB) will look at someone like Maxwell,” he added.
