Captaincy in the shortest format of the game, T20s, is a demanding job. The skipper has to be on his toes at all times because of the pace at which the game is played. Captaincy records, though, do not always give the correct picture. The quality of the team can be a major factor in a captain’s record. Also, in T20 cricket, since it is a shorter contest, any team can defeat a seemingly tougher opponent on a given day. Here’s a look at 12 captains who have experienced most defeats in T20 internationals.

<strong>12. George Bailey (Australia)- 13:</strong>

George Bailey led the Aussies in 28 T20Is. Under his captaincy, the men from Down Under won 14 and lost 13 matches while one match ended in a tie. Bailey is an important member of the Australian ODI team however no longer features in the T20 setup. He has played 28 T20Is and scored 470 runs at an average of 26.11 including 2 fifties with the best of 63. He led the team in the 2012 and 2014 World T20s.

Daniel Vettori led the Kiwis in 28 T20Is. Under his captaincy, New Zealand won 13 and lost 13 and tied 2 matches. He was the skipper of the national side in the first 3 editions of the World T20 from 2007 to 2010. The left-arm spinner had a glorious career in all formats for his country and retired from international cricket after the 50-over World Cup final in 2015 in Melbourne against Australia which the home side won. Vettori’s 34 T20Is yielded 38 wickets at an average of 19.68 including the best spell of 4/20.

Born in Christchurch, Peter Borren turned out for Canterbury A and New Zealand Under-19s &#8211; playing alongside Ross Taylor and Jesse Ryder at the Under-19 World Cup in 2001-02 &#8211; before opting for Netherlands. In January 2010, Borren was part of the first group of Netherlands players to be awarded central contracts and was appointed the captain of the national side for the World Cricket League Division One tournament in July 2010. Under his captaincy, the Dutch have won 20, lost 13 and tied 1 T20I. His 40 T20I appearances have produced 618 runs including a fifty and 18 wickets with the best of 2/19.

Brendan Taylor is arguably one of the best batsmen produced by Zimbabwe. The wicketkeeper-batsman was a regular member of the side until the 2015 50-over World Cup post which he moved to England to play County cricket by signing a Kolpak deal. He led his country in 17 T20Is off which the team lost 14 and won 3. Taylor’s 26 T20Is produced 594 runs at an average of 28.28 including 5 fifties and a top score of 75 not out.

Mushfiqur Rahim’s sound technique in his glovework and with the bat has made him one of Bangladesh’s best ever cricketers. After Bangladesh’s unexpected defeat in Zimbabwe in 2011, Mushfiqur was also elevated to a leadership role, taking over as captain from Shakib Al Hasan. Under his captaincy, the team lost 14, won 8 and ties one match out of 23 T20Is. He 53 T20Is have produced 659 runs at an average of 17.81 including 1 fifty. He has a far superior record with the bat in ODIs and Tests averaging above 30 in both formats.

One of New Zealand’s greatest ever, McCullum recently retired from international cricket however not before having an incredible career. He led the Kiwis in 28 T20Is off which the team won 13 lost 14 and tied one match. He played 71 T20Is and scored 2140 runs at an average of 35.66 including 2 tons and 13 fifties with a best of 123.

There have been few feistier cricketers in England’s cricketing history than Stuart Broad. Broad’s combative fast bowling and volatile temperament has been one of his great strengths as well as periodically bringing criticism about his behaviour. He led his team in 27 T20Is off which the team won 11 and lost 15 matches. Broad has played 56 T20Is taking 65 wickets at an average of 22.93 with the best of 4/24. His economy rate is 7.62. Broad continues to be a vital cog in England’s Test side, however, is not a regular member of the limited-overs set-up any longer.

<strong>5. Darren Sammy (West Indies)- 16:</strong>

Darren Sammy has got his team into the semi-finals of the World T20 2016. Sammy has been a successful skipper for his side in the shortest format. In 2012, his side lifted the trophy by defeating the home team Sri Lanka in Colombo. Under his captaincy, the team has won 256 matches, lost 17, tied 1 and experienced a no result on 2 occasions in 46 T20Is. He has played 63 T20Is scoring 526 runs with the top score of 42 not out and picked up 43 wickets with a best of 5/26.

<strong>4. Elton Chigumbura (Zimbabwe)- 16:</strong>

One of Zimbabwe’s finest all-rounders, Elton Chigumbura is an aggressive batsman, who generally bats in the middle order for his team. Chigumbura took over as captain of the national side after Prosper Utseya’s resignation. Chigumbura’s own form fell away alarmingly and in June 2011 he was replaced as captain by Brendan Taylor. He was handed back the limited-overs captaincy, however, stood down following a series against Bangladesh. He has played 44 T20Is scoring 711 runs including 2 fifties and taken 16 wickets. Under his captaincy Zimbabwe won 2 and lost 16 T20Is.

<strong>3. Shahid Afridi (Pakistan)- 23:</strong>

Shahid Afridi, the Pakistan T20 skipper is the most capped player in the shortest format. His 98 T20Is have produced 1405 runs including the top score of 54 not out. His fast leg-breaks have been largely successful yielding 97 wickets including the best spell of 4/11. Under his captaincy, Pakistan has won 19 and lost 23 T20Is while one match ended in a tie. Afridi has been a mercurial cricketer though his T20I career might come to an end after Pakistan&#8217;s first round exit from the World T20 2016.

<strong>2. William Porterfield (Ireland)- 20:</strong>

William Porterfield has remained an almost ever-present figure in Ireland’s rise in international cricket. The left-handed top-order batsman and an outstanding fielder, Porterfield captained Ireland at every level from U13 upwards. His 48 T20Is have all been as the skipper and produced 893 runs including 3 fifties and the top score of 72. Under his captaincy Ireland has won 24 and lost 20 T20Is while experiencing 4 no results.

<p>One of Zimbabwe’s finest all-rounders, Elton Chigumbura is an aggressive batsman, who generally bats in the middle order for his team. Chigumbura took over as captain of the national side after Prosper Utseya’s resignation. Chigumbura’s own form fell away alarmingly and in June 2011 he was replaced as captain by Brendan Taylor. He was handed back the limited-overs captaincy, however, stood down following a series against Bangladesh. He has played 44 T20Is scoring 711 runs including 2 fifties and taken 16 wickets. Under his captaincy Zimbabwe won 2 and lost 16 T20Is.</p>

<p>Shahid Afridi, the Pakistan T20 skipper is the most capped player in the shortest format. His 98 T20Is have produced 1405 runs including the top score of 54 not out. His fast leg-breaks have been largely successful yielding 97 wickets including the best spell of 4/11. Under his captaincy, Pakistan has won 19 and lost 23 T20Is while one match ended in a tie. Afridi has been a mercurial cricketer though his T20I career might come to an end after Pakistan’s first round exit from the World T20 2016.</p>

<p>William Porterfield has remained an almost ever-present figure in Ireland’s rise in international cricket. The left-handed top-order batsman and an outstanding fielder, Porterfield captained Ireland at every level from U13 upwards. His 48 T20Is have all been as the skipper and produced 893 runs including 3 fifties and the top score of 72. Under his captaincy Ireland has won 24 and lost 20 T20Is while experiencing 4 no results.</p>

<p>The Indian limited overs skipper has led the team from the inaugural edition of the World T20 and will do so at home in 2016. He has been an outstanding captain across all formats however also holds this dubious distinction of most losses in T20Is. He has played 67 T20Is and scored 1026 runs at an average of 35.37 including the top score of 48 not out. Under his captaincy, India has won 39 and lost 27 T20Is while experiencing 1 tie and 1 no result.</p>

<p>Captaincy in the shortest format of the game, T20s, is a demanding job. The skipper has to be on his toes at all times because of the pace at which the game is played. Captaincy records, though, do not always give the correct picture. The quality of the team can be a major factor in a captain’s record. Also, in T20 cricket, since it is a shorter contest, any team can defeat a seemingly tougher opponent on a given day. Here’s a look at 12 captains who have experienced most defeats in T20 internationals.</p>
<h4><strong>12. George Bailey (Australia)- 13:</strong></h4>

<p>George Bailey led the Aussies in 28 T20Is. Under his captaincy, the men from Down Under won 14 and lost 13 matches while one match ended in a tie. Bailey is an important member of the Australian ODI team however no longer features in the T20 setup. He has played 28 T20Is and scored 470 runs at an average of 26.11 including 2 fifties with the best of 63. He led the team in the 2012 and 2014 World T20s.</p>

<p>Daniel Vettori led the Kiwis in 28 T20Is. Under his captaincy, New Zealand won 13 and lost 13 and tied 2 matches. He was the skipper of the national side in the first 3 editions of the World T20 from 2007 to 2010. The left-arm spinner had a glorious career in all formats for his country and retired from international cricket after the 50-over World Cup final in 2015 in Melbourne against Australia which the home side won. Vettori’s 34 T20Is yielded 38 wickets at an average of 19.68 including the best spell of 4/20.</p>
<h4><strong>10. Peter Borren (Netherlands)- 13:</strong></h4>

<p>Born in Christchurch, Peter Borren turned out for Canterbury A and New Zealand Under-19s &#8211; playing alongside Ross Taylor and Jesse Ryder at the Under-19 World Cup in 2001-02 &#8211; before opting for Netherlands. In January 2010, Borren was part of the first group of Netherlands players to be awarded central contracts and was appointed the captain of the national side for the World Cricket League Division One tournament in July 2010. Under his captaincy, the Dutch have won 20, lost 13 and tied 1 T20I. His 40 T20I appearances have produced 618 runs including a fifty and 18 wickets with the best of 2/19.</p>
<h4><strong>9. Brendan Taylor (Zimbabwe)- 14:</strong></h4>

<p>Brendan Taylor is arguably one of the best batsmen produced by Zimbabwe. The wicketkeeper-batsman was a regular member of the side until the 2015 50-over World Cup post which he moved to England to play County cricket by signing a Kolpak deal. He led his country in 17 T20Is off which the team lost 14 and won 3. Taylor’s 26 T20Is produced 594 runs at an average of 28.28 including 5 fifties and a top score of 75 not out.</p>
<h4><strong>8. Mushfiqur Rahim (Bangladesh)- 14:</strong></h4>

<p>Mushfiqur Rahim’s sound technique in his glovework and with the bat has made him one of Bangladesh’s best ever cricketers. After Bangladesh’s unexpected defeat in Zimbabwe in 2011, Mushfiqur was also elevated to a leadership role, taking over as captain from Shakib Al Hasan. Under his captaincy, the team lost 14, won 8 and ties one match out of 23 T20Is. He 53 T20Is have produced 659 runs at an average of 17.81 including 1 fifty. He has a far superior record with the bat in ODIs and Tests averaging above 30 in both formats.</p>
<h4><strong>7. Brendon McCullum (New Zealand)- 14:</strong></h4>

<p>Few batsmen could light up a match and few captains could take bolder decisions than Brendon McCullum. One of New Zealand’s greatest ever, McCullum recently retired from international cricket however not before having an incredible career. He led the Kiwis in 28 T20Is off which the team won 13 lost 14 and tied one match. He played 71 T20Is and scored 2140 runs at an average of 35.66 including 2 tons and 13 fifties with a best of 123.</p>
<h4><strong>6. Stuart Broad (England)- 15:</strong></h4>

<p>There have been few feistier cricketers in England’s cricketing history than Stuart Broad. Broad’s combative fast bowling and volatile temperament has been one of his great strengths as well as periodically bringing criticism about his behaviour. He led his team in 27 T20Is off which the team won 11 and lost 15 matches. Broad has played 56 T20Is taking 65 wickets at an average of 22.93 with the best of 4/24. His economy rate is 7.62. Broad continues to be a vital cog in England’s Test side, however, is not a regular member of the limited-overs set-up any longer.</p>

<p>Darren Sammy has got his team into the semi-finals of the World T20 2016. Sammy has been a successful skipper for his side in the shortest format. In 2012, his side lifted the trophy by defeating the home team Sri Lanka in Colombo. Under his captaincy, the team has won 256 matches, lost 17, tied 1 and experienced a no result on 2 occasions in 46 T20Is. He has played 63 T20Is scoring 526 runs with the top score of 42 not out and picked up 43 wickets with a best of 5/26.</p>
