Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) have turned out to be insurmountable in the 2020 edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). Having already made the playoffs, the team has chopped and changed quite a bit, benching some of their key stars at times. However, that hasn’t stopped them from securing their ninth back-to-back victories in the round-robin stage of the tournament.
Kieron Pollard and Co thumped the St Lucia Zouks by 23 runs at the Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba in Trinidad. After being put in to bat first, the Knights slammed 175 for five in their 20 overs. Lendl Simmons got out cheaply, but Tion Webster’s 14-ball 20 got their innings going. Tim Seifert’s 33 and Darren Bravo’s 42-ball 50 steadied the ship, but it was Pollard, who pressed the accelerator.
The TKR skipper smashed a 21-ball 42 to propel his team’s score. For the Zouks, Scott Kuggelejin was the most effective with two wickets. In their run-chase, St Lucia started well through Mark Deyal’s 40 and Andre Fletcher’s 42. However, things went haywire when they were about to up the ante.
Both the batsman perished in a space of 14 balls, bringing the Knights back into the game. Mohammad Nabi, Najibullah Zadran and Daren Sammy got into the double-figures, but their efforts went in vain. TKR skipper Pollard delivered with the ball as well, picking up three crucial wickets.
Tridents end with a victory
In the second of Saturday’s doubleheader, the Barbados Tridents secured a victory and bowed out of the tournament on a high. Jason Holder and Co got over the Jamaica Tallawahs by seven wickets. The Tallawahs racked up 161, and the target of 162 was expected to pose challenges to the Tridents.
Andre Russell’s 28-ball 54 and Jermaine Blackwood’s 59-ball 74 helped Jamaica put on the daunting total. Mitchell Santner was the most effective with an economy rate of five in his three overs, though he didn’t get any wickets. The Tridents, in their run-chase, got off to a rather poor start.
Johnson Charles and Shamarh Brooks perished early, but Jonathan Carter (42*) and skipper Holder (69) put their heads down, accumulating 90 for the third wicket. Mitchell Santner’s 21-ball 35 with three fours and two sixes made sure that the Tridents got past the target with 10 balls to spare.

This is the 14th time Kieron Pollard has taken two wickets in a CPL match. Five of those 14 times have been against St Lucia Zouks. #TKRvSLZ
