Day 9 of the ongoing Caribbean Premier League (CPL) witnessed the vintage Kieron Pollard for the Trinbago Knight Riders. He helped his team to chase down the total single-handedly while the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots continued their barren run in the tournament. Match 17 and 18 of the CPL on Saturday were two contrasting affairs in terms of excitement.
The first match of the day was between the Knight Riders and the defending champions Barbados Tridents. After losing the toss, the latter side batted well thanks to Johnson Charles (47) and Kyle Mayers (42). But their middle-order crumbled, not for the first time, which led to the Tridents not getting the final kick in the death overs. They eventually ended up with 148 runs on the board for the loss of seven wickets.
Akeal Hossain, Sikandar Raza and Jayden Seales picked up two wickets each to make up for Dwayne Bravo‘s absence in this game.
With the bat, the Knight Riders were left reeling at 36/4 after 8 overs with Jason Holder leading from the front with the ball. And this is when the skipper in Kieron Pollard woke up. Coming in to bat at seven, he took the responsibility of the innings and smashed the ball out of the park nine times. His blitzkrieg of 72 off 28 deliveries with two fours and nine sixes only ended through a run-out in the final over with his team still needing 8 off 4 deliveries.
But Khary Pierre came out and smacked a six to bring the target within sight before eventually winning the game for the Knight Riders with one ball to spare. This win also kept their winning streak going for six matches and have almost sealed their place in the knockouts.
Patriots in a must-win situation after losing yet another game
St Kitts and Nevis Patriots faced the Jamaica Tallawahs in the second game of the day. After opting to bat first, the Tallawahs got off to a sedate start. Glenn Phillips took care of the scoring while the likes of Nkrumah Bonner, Jermaine Blackwood and Asif Ali played second fiddle to him stitching crucial partnerships. Despite losing three wickets quickly in the death overs, Phillips kept going and made sure he remained not-out till the end.
He scored 79 off 61 balls with two fours and six massive maximums while Rayad Emrit returned with the figures of 3/32 in his four overs, The Tallawahs posted a competitive total of 147/6 after their 20 overs. The Patriots needed a special effort from one of their top batsmen to overhaul the target. But their poor performance with the bat continued.
None of them was able to connect the ball after eating so many deliveries with only Evin Lewis (batting at seven) managing to hit a couple of sixes scoring 21 off 16 deliveries. Carlos Brathwaite, Fidel Edwards and Veerasammy Permaul kept picking wickets at regular intervals to restrict the opposition to just 110. This win has kept the Tallawahs very much in the hunt for the top four spots while the Patriots continue to sink.

Just saw the highlights of the last CPL game and I’m not surprised on Pollard’s great resecue against Tridents. He can pull off anything with his hard-hitting. #PollardPower

Kieron Pollard has been by far the quickest scorer in the CPL, but he's done so registering a lower false shot percentage than all but one of the other batsmen to face 50+ balls. #BTvTKR pic.twitter.com/xXC7nD0bYo

Kieron Pollard playing out Rashid with 70 needed off 30 balls was one of the most calculated pieces of game management I've ever seen.#CPL

Decided to skip today CPL's match mid way through the second innings and watch Kangana's interview with Arnab. Little did I expect Pollard would smash 72 in 30 odd bals!! Mumbai Indians have an exciting season ahead!! #CPL20

Glenn Phillips scored 79*(61) v St Kitts. Batted the entire 20 overs & constructed his innings well. Looks so much like Steve Smith. One for the future & should, without doubt, play in the IPL in the coming years.
