Former Pakistani batsman Shahid Afridi is revered as one of the hardest and cleanest hitters of the cricket ball. It would not be wrong to claim that it was Afridi who was the pioneer of an out and out approach with the bat on the field. Afridi never really bothered how the track was or who the opposition bowlers were; there was only one modus operandi for Shahid Afridi, and that was to go ‘boom boom’.
Despite an illustrious career with several milestones to his name, there was one milestone that eluded his cabinet. He did not have a ton in the shortest format of the game. However, in his most recent appearance for his County side Hampshire, Shahid Afridi got that checkbox ticked as well. Afridi hit a bludgeoning ton to help his side post a mammoth total of 249 on the board.
The opposition, Derbyshire, had no clue about what had dawned upon them on the day. Hampshire beat Derbyshire by 101 runs – the exact number of runs that Afridi scored in the match. After the innings, the good wishes came in flooding for the hard hitting batsman.
Needless to add, the celebrations came in flooding too. A video of the post match celebration has been surfacing the social media. In the video, Shahid Afridi is seen returning to the hotel room where he is greeted by his close friends. Afridi is greeted by all his friends and is then asked to cut the cake. Afridi cut the cake and had a piece of it to cherish the moment.
Talking about the game, Afridi opened the innings with Calvin Dickinson for Hampshire. After Dickinson perished cheaply on 18, James Vince and Afridi added 103 runs for the second wicket. Skipper Vince departed for 55. But the real impetus was given by Afridi who scored a brilliant 101 off 43 deliveries with 10 fours and 7 sixes to his name. He was dismissed in the 13th over of the game.
