Virat Kohli, the Indian skipper has given out his opinion on the possibility of playing Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav together in the upcoming T20 World Cup. After getting dropped from the T20I squad that played against South Africa and Bangladesh. However, he was picked by the selectors for the three-match West Indies series in the shorter format.
It looked like the reunion of the spin twins of India, who had played for the national side in several games between 2017 and 2019. Chahal kept on playing for the national side but a sudden dip in the Kuldeep’s form ruled him out of the team. His last appearance in the shorter format came in February against New Zealand.
Virat Kohli on playing two wrist spinners in T20 World Cup 2020
Chahal and Kuldeep share a strong bond on the cricket field and on numerous occasions, it has worked for Virat Kohli and Co. The duo played together in 10 T20Is for Team India and have bagged as many as 41 wickets with three 4-fers and one 5-fer. Moreover, the team had won eight games out of the 10 in which the spin twins have played together so far.
In the pre-match conference of the 1st T20I, Virat Kohli said that it is a luxury to have two wrist spinners in the side. But having said that, he also added that the chances of playing two wrist spinners together in one match in the upcoming T20 World Cup look slim. He also added that Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar provide variety to the team, who can contribute with the bat and ball. But it will all depend upon the conditions.
Virat Kohli feels that Jadeja is currently in the best batting form of his life, who is a brilliant finger spinner as well. Moreover, there are no questions over his fielding abilities which will play an important role in the big grounds of Australia during the mega event. According to him, the team wants to use his good form to the fullest going into the World Cup.
“Well look having two wrist spinners is a big advantage when you are playing in Australia in the big fields. There might be some games in which they both might play together, but in T20Is it is all about balance. And, predominantly we will probably see one guy playing with Jadeja and Washi (Washington Sundar) because it gives us all kind of varieties in the bowling attack along with the two-seamers and one seaming allrounder,” Virat Kohli told the reporters in the pre-match conference.
“So, you need to have six bowling options in T20I cricket and it is a basic formula in the shorter format. You can’t go in with just five bowlers and expecting from everyone to bowl four good overs. Two wrist-spinners as I said if there might be opportunities for both of them to play together. And, we will see how it can be worked out.”
“Jadeja is batting really well and is probably in the best batting form of his life. In bowling, he is a perfect finger spinner and he is very accurate as well. I think this is the really best phase of his career and we want to maximize that and Sundar is brilliant with the new ball also,” Virat Kohli told the reporters in the pre-match conference,” Kohli further said.
