Chandika Hathurusingha in line to become Sri Lanka's head coach

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Chief, Thilanga Sumathipala, recently confirmed that they are eyeing Bangladesh’s head coach Chandika Hathurusingha as their next coach. He revealed that the board is waiting for Hathurusingha to finish his tenure with the Bangladesh side and complete all formal obligations.

This official statement comes as a big news since the BCB Chief, Nazmul Hasan, had also expressed his desire to retain the services of the Chandika Hathurusingha. Barring the most recent tour of South Africa, team Bangladesh has flourished big time under the eyes of Hathurusingha.

They had managed to make it to the semi-finals of the ICC Champions Trophy this year. Needless to concede, the Sri Lanka-born coach is highly skilled in his department. As per the recent reports in the Hindustan Times, SLC confirmed that will be offering the 49-year old Chandika Hathurusingha the position of the head coach soon “subject to the full release of his contractual obligations” with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

Thilanga Sumathipala, the SLC Chief, also remarked that he has already spoken to the BCB in this regard.

“There is no doubt that Hathuru (Hathurusingha) would be a great fit for us with the direction of both our short and long term goals. I have written personally to the BCB informing him of our intention (to hire Hathurusingha),” quoted Sumathipala.

Vastly experienced in the trade

Talking about Chandika’s association with the Bangladesh team, the former Sri Lankan cricketer had landed a contract back in the year 2014. The 26 Tests and 35 ODIs former cricketer was associated with the New South Wales team in the Australian domestic circuit prior to that. He has also worked in the capacity of the Assistant coach in the Sri Lankan team when Trevor Bayliss was in charge of the national side.
