Lasith Malinga has been one of the most lethal fast-bowlers Sri Lanka have ever produced. However, poor form and frequent injuries have ensured that he stays out of the selectors’ radar. His ability to deliver Yorkers and picking up wickets at will has also been on the wane. He went unsold in this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL), despite being the all-time leading wicket-taker in the event.
The 34-year-old last donned the national colours last year in a T20 International in Colombo when India toured the Island. Nevertheless, the Galle-born bowler has been honing his skills in the domestic circuit. Meanwhile, Chandika Hathuransingha, the head coach of the Lankans, hasn’t completely ruled out his chances of making a comeback to the national setup.
That’s a good sign for us
“He has the same opportunity that any other cricketer has, to get into the Lankan team. If he plays in the domestic tournaments, like any other player the selectors will look at him as an option depending on the team’s requirement,” Hathuransingha was quoted as saying in Daily Mirror.
In the meantime, the coach also sounded delighted by the reduction of casualties owing to injuries. “The last six months we’ve seen a tremendous improvement in terms of injuries. We haven’t got any soft tissue injuries in the last four months. That’s a good sign for us, and that is down to training schedules are being managed,” he added.
Malinga recently played in the Global Canada T20 for the Montreal Tigers. The 34-year old played six matches in which he notched 13 wickets at an average of 11.84. Moreover, he was accurate as far as hitting the right channels is concerned as he finished with an economy of 6.41, which is considered incredible in the T20 format. His best figures of 3/11 came against Toronto Nationals in King City.
