Cheteshwar Pujara talks about India’s historic win in Australia and his batting versatility
Widely bracketed as only a Test specialist, Pujara feels that his credentials with the white ball are lesser acknowledged.
India’s historic Test series win against Australia at their den has sparked a new revolution of Test cricket in India. The interest in the longest format of the game seemed to be dwindling, but with this win, the love for red-ball cricket has relapsed, and so has team India’s confidence. Star of India’s win against Australia, Cheteshwar Pujara feels that India will be more confident after this win, and the ICC World Test Championship will be a very important series for them.
Pujara, who was under scrutiny before the start of the tour, bounced back with 521 runs at 74.42 to help India secure their first ever Test victory in Australia. He has been one of the best performers for India’s Test team overseas and believes that going forward, India will be a stronger unit every time they move out of their home to play a Test series.
“I think the most important thing is the Test championship, which is starting from this year,” Pujara told Cricket Next. “So, to win that as a team and continue the success which we had in Australia is the most important thing. We have started winning overseas. And whenever we play overseas now, I am very sure we will be a different unit.”
Pujara feels he can play good limited-overs cricket too
Widely bracketed as only a Test specialist, Pujara feels that his credentials with the white ball are lesser acknowledged, and pointed out his achievements in the shorter format of the game.
“If you look at my List A cricket, the way I have batted, the number of runs that I have scored, is very good and when I played white-ball cricket for Yorkshire last season, I scored many runs. I think I had a hundred and three fifties in about four innings which shows I can play white-ball cricket.”
He has played only five ODIs from which he has 51 runs, and is yet to make his T20I debut. In Tests, however, his achievements need no introduction.
