All the teams are now shifting their focus on the 2019 World Cup to be held in England and Wales the coming year. With the quadrennial event less than a year to go, the teams are looking to build a strong squad that can perform well in the event. As for the Pakistan Cricket Team, their Chief Selector Inzamam ul Haq has backed captain Sarfraz Ahmed as Pakistan’s captain till the World Cup next year.
Ahmed led Pakistan to Champions Trophy title
Pakistan cricket scaled new heights under Sarfaraz’s captaincy. The biggest feat was winning the Champions Trophy in June last year, something that the team had never done before in the history of the tournament. Following the Champions Trophy win, Sarfaraz was made the captain in the longer format too. Inzamam believes that he would be the best leader for the men in green in the world cup.
Talking to media in Sharjah, where the third edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) is currently going on, Inzamam said, “Captain is the one responsible for playing the team in the middle, he’s the leader. It is necessary that we know who is going to lead Pakistan in the world cup. The way Sarfaraz has led Pakistan in last one year has left no doubt that he should be retained as captain. He is and he must stay as captain.
The selector also revealed their plans for the World Cup, saying that they will be identifying as many as 20 players for the much-anticipated event. He wants to give them ample time to perform and prove themselves for the biggest cricketing extravaganza.
“I strongly believe that the players who we have for world cup should be playing together till the mega event for next one year so that a combination can be made for them and they can gain the confidence.”
