Chris Gayle appointed as the vice-captain of the Windies for the World Cup 2019
World Cup will be the last tournament where spectators can witness Chris Gayle's thunderous sixes in the international cricket.
The league stage of the 12th edition of IPL has ended and so has the run for the last four franchises in the points table for the season. The Kings XI Punjab were knocked out of the tournament on Sunday, however, there’s no denying that two of their batsmen have done extremely well in the season — KL Rahul and Chris Gayle. Unfortunately for the fans, the World Cup will be the last tournament where they can watch Gayle’s thunderous maximums in the international cricket.
The Universe Boss has amassed 490 runs at 40.83 and a strike rate of 153.60 in this season of the Indian Premier League. Moving on to the next segment, is the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, ahead of which Chris Gayle had announced his decision to retire from International Cricket when the World event ends. Imagine those matches way back in the early 2000s when Gayle used to open with Wavell Hinds, and the legendary Brian Lara was the skipper of the team. With Gayle, an era will come to an end. He was the last of the ‘Golden era’ to have been around for so long.
But to honour him, the WICB has named Gayle as the vice-captain of the West Indies cricket team for the upcoming World Cup. It’s been seen as one of the positives that the new management of the Windies Cricket Board has brought about. Gayle is the most experienced player in the young team that is led by the very able Jason Holder and also being a former captain will be best suited for the job during the showpiece event.
According to Cricbuzz, Gayle was quoted saying, “It is always an honour to represent the West Indies in any format and this World Cup for me is special. As a senior player, it is my responsibility to support the captain and everyone else in the team. This will probably be the biggest World Cup, so there will be great expectations and I know we will do very well for the people of the West Indies.”
Shai Hope is named vice-captain for the Tri-series in Ireland
West Indies is currently playing a Tri-Nation series in Ireland and because of Gayle’s absence due to the IPL, opener and the extremely talented Shai Hope was asked to be deputy during the tour. There’s no doubt that the youngster is very excited for the role.
“It’s a tremendous honour to be appointed vice-captain for this series here in Ireland. Ahead of this tournament, I was asked to take on this role and I was happy to accept. Anything I’m asked to do for West Indies cricket I’m always happy and willing to put my hand up, so this is great,” said Hope.
