The Universe Boss Chris Gayle is likely to feature in the West Indies squad when they take on England in the limited-overs series. Gayle has been named in the squad for the ODI series against the ‘Three Lions’. Apart from him, all-rounder Marlon Samuels has also been included in the team. Samuels was one of the chief architects in both the World T20 finals for the Windies team.
The Royal London One-Day series begins in Manchester on the 19th September with the fourth of the five match series set to be played at the Kia Oval on Wednesday 27 September. Kyle Hope, Shai Hope, and captain Jason Holder are also part of the team. Shai Hope was the man of the match in the 2nd Test match, as he scored centuries in both the innings of the Test match and took his side home.
Earlier, controversy hammered the Windies side when selectors announced that the players had to play super 50, a domestic List A competition to be considered for selection. The likes of Gayle, Dwayne, Pollard, Darren Sammy, Andre Russell and Sunil Narine, all of whom are known as ‘T20 freelancers’, were dropped and a few others were picked.
Players v Board
A year after the incident, the selectors once again bowled a googly when they selected Pollard and Narine for a Tri-Series in the Caribbean involving Australia and South Africa as the other teams. Several commented on the sudden change of heart of the selectors with all-rounder and former skipper Dwyane Bravo calling it “magic”.
Dwayne’s brother and a classic left-handed batsman Darren Bravo, meanwhile revolted against the board, termed the chairman a ‘big idiot’ and made himself unavailable for selection. “I have given up so much for West Indies cricket and the way I have been treated is like, my efforts and my energy and my whatever went all down the drain. And I don’t like the way I have been treated. Yes, I want to play Test cricket, but I have to make decisions, as I said about my family and stuff like that,” Darren had commented then.
