Swashbuckling Australian batsman Chris Lynn has been ruled out of the upcoming five-match ODI series against England owing to a calf injury. The 27-year-old, who was recalled to the national team sustained a calf strain during a Big Bash League (BBL) clash with the Perth Scorchers last week. The calf strain is the latest setback for Lynn, who had sustained a shoulder injury while on national duty last summer.

He had to undergo shoulder reconstruction surgery in July and was initially forecast to be on sidelines until the end of January. Although Lynn returned to the cricket pitch in the ongoing BBL his injury woes continued as he was forced to miss the start of this year’s campaign due to a hamstring problem.

The dynamic right-hander could play just five matches in the previous edition of BBL before being struck down by injury, but his 309 runs at an average of 154.50, which included 26 sixes were enough to see him crowned the player of the tournament.

Although the Australian selectors are yet to name Lynn’s replacement, the injury could open the door for Maxwell, who was controversially dropped from the national squad last week for the first time since his debut in 2012-13.

Lynn out for three-four weeks

The news was confirmed by a representative of sports science Alex Kountouris. Chris initially complained of the tightness in his calf during the domestic T20 match. And now, the scans have confirmed that he will have to sit out for three-to-four weeks.

According to ESPNcricinfo, Kountouris was quoted saying, “Chris initially left the field against the Scorchers complaining of tightness in his calf. He reported increasing discomfort over the 24 hours that followed and the Heat’s medical staff made the decision to send him for a scan. That scan confirmed the injury, which is expected to prevent him from playing for three-to-four weeks.”

He added, “When Chris recovers, the expectation is that he will need to prove his fitness in match action before being considered again for international selection.”
