Chris Morris created an IPL record of the highest strike rate in an innings (minimum 25 runs) in his blazing innings of 38 runs which came off just 9 balls. Morris recorded a strike rate of 422.22 and pulverized the Rising Pune Supergiant bowlers in the final two overs. His innings constituted 4 boundaries and 3 sixes. There were no dot balls in his innings.
The previous record was held by Albie Morkel. He had recorded a strike rate of 400 in his knock of 28 which came off just 7 balls in CSK’s memorable chase of 207 against RCB in 2012.
Morris strode out to the middle of the fall of centurion Sanju Samson’s wicket. Only 10 deliveries were left in the innings and Morris had the good luck of facing 9 of them. He played two inside out shots off Zampa that went for boundaries in that over and between them, smashed a 102 meter six over deep mid-wicket. As many as 22 runs were scored off that over of Zampa which spoiled the figures of the leg-spinner as he returned with 1/45.
The next over and the final one of the innings saw Ben Stokes, the highest paid overseas cricketer ever, going the distance. Morris took 23 runs off him which included consecutive sixes off the last two balls to lift the Daredevils total to 205/4. The stand out shot was the last ball hoick over mid-wicket which made a sweet sound when the ball hit the bat.
This was the first time that the 200-run mark was breached in a T20 game at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.
Due to Morris’ blitz and Samson’s finesse earlier, Daredevils took 76 runs off the final 4 overs and 45 came off the last two. Such an effort will lift the entire Delhi Daredevils setup as they were plundered last season and also lost their opening game this season.
