In recent events of the Champions Trophy, English fast bowler Chris Woakes has been ruled out of the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy due to the side strain sustained during the match against Bangladesh. England and Bangladesh faced off against each other in the tournament opener at Kennington Oval, London yesterday.
Chris Woakes missed out on the final two one-dayers against South Africa as he was nursing an injury. Though he looked fit and fine to bowl against Bangladesh, he only managed to add another over to his spell and shrugged off the pitch gingerly towards the dressing room.
England put a lid on the scoring rate of the Bangladeshis in the latter half of the innings due to some good death bowling by Liam Plunkett and Mark Wood. England chased down the total set by Bangladeshi with ease due to some brilliant batting from the English top order. Alex Hales and Captain Morgan provided exceptional support to Joe Root who scored a marvellous ton in the daunting chase.
More concerns for England
To make matters worse for Eoin Morgan, Joe Root also sustained a calf injury during his knock while Ben Stokes too has been nursing his knee. Citing the importance of Woakes in the English line-up, Morgan stated, “He’s obviously been very impressive for us over the last couple of years, and a mainstay, a very reliable guy, And it is a worry when he goes off the field and can’t come back on and bowl.” according to espncricinfo.com.
When asked about whether Woakes was rushed into playing the match, Morgan defended by saying,”He was chomping at the bit to play, If we rushed him, he might have played the last game of the one-day series but we didn’t want to rush him.” England faces Australia and New Zealand next in the tournament after defeating Bangladesh handsomely.
