Close to 15 Bangladesh players injured ahead of the Zimbabwe series
The BCB officials were hopeful of the players recovering in time for the series.
As many as fifteen players from the Bangladesh side are injured ahead of their series against Zimbabwe, which has left the board in a serious crisis. The two teams will first take each other on in a three-match ODI series, which begins on October 21 at Dhaka’s Shere Bangla National Stadium. The One-Dayers will be followed by two Test matches which are scheduled to end on November 15.
Bangladesh recently suffered a series of injuries in the recently concluded Asia Cup. They lost their senior opener Tamim Iqbal in the opening fixture of the tournament. He fractured his left wrist in the match against Sri Lanka but bravely came back out to bat with just one hand. However, he was ruled out of the tournament and will be out of action for several weeks.
The veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was also forced to miss the all-important final against India in Dubai and will be on the sidelines for three months. Meanwhile, Bangladesh skipper Mashrafe Mortaza was playing the Asia Cup with a broken thumb, and will now have to miss the Zimbabwe series due to his injury.
Who else is injured?
Even wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim played the Asia Cup in the UAE with an injury, but there is no clarity as to whether he has recovered fully and will take part in the series against Zimbabwe. The Bangladesh Cricket Board Cricket Operation Committee’s chairman Akram Khan informed that as many as 14-15 players from the national team are currently injured, which has turned into a matter of serious concern for the Tigers.
“Currently 14-15 players are injured. This is a very serious issue for us because we don’t have many options. Now we have to take every step carefully,” Akram was quoted as saying by bdcrictime.
According to the chairman, even Mustafizur Rahman, Mehidy Hasan and Mohammad Mithun are among those players who are unfit at the moment. Moreover, Mominul Haque is suffering from a hand injury while pacer Rubel Hossain is also in the list of injured Bangladeshi cricketers.
However, Akram is still hopeful that barring Shakib and Tamim, most of the players will be available for the Zimbabwe series. “We have to think which players can play and which players can not. And we have to win too. We will give chance to youngsters. If they perform well, then it will be good for us. Then we can take some risks in the future,” he concluded.
