With clouds of unemployment hovering, Steve Smith tries his hands at Baseball
Several players, including the big names like David Warner, have hinted at the possible boycott of the Bangladesh tour, the India series, and even the Ashes.
Australian skipper Steve Smith recently posted a video of himself on the social media handle. The video sees him try his hands at batting – but of a different kind altogether. Smith is seen trying his hands at Baseball while vacationing in the United States. The dark humor relating to the story could pretty well suggest that Baseball could be a good option for the Australian cricketers who are threatened with unemployment at the moment.
The ongoing tussle between the Australian players and the Cricket Australia over the payment issues has taken several ugly turns. Things started when the CA wanted to roll out a new revenue distribution system. The players, under their parent body Australia cricketers’ Association (ACA), were against the new system and put their cases forward to the CA for retaining the existing system of revenue sharing.
The CA Chief, James Sutherland, was not impressed at all. He threatened the players to accept the new system else face unemployment. This did not go down well with the ACA and since then there have been several mediations between the two parties. The CA later tried to negotiate with a modified deal.
But the ACA rejected it citing that the fundamentals of revenue sharing were ignored in the proposed negotiation. Now, the existing memorandum is set to end on June 30. There seems to be absolutely no chance that the payment issues would be resolved before the deadline.
Hence, the Australian cricketers are likely to face unemployment. Several players, including the big names like David Warner, have hinted at the possible boycott of the Bangladesh tour, the India series, and even the Ashes this year if their demands are not met. Amidst all this, Steve Smith found it right to try how Baseball feels like.
