#MeToo: CoA asks Rahul Johri for an explanation on the sexual harassment allegations
Johri is the first name in Indian cricket who has faced the fire of the #metoo movement.
The #metoo movement struck hard in Indian cricket when the chief executive of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Rahul Johri was named in one of the accusations. On Saturday, a tweet emerged from an activist reading an account from a woman who claimed to have been a former colleague of Johri. It has had an immediate effect as the Committee of Administrators (CoA) has asked the CEO for an explanation.
The Supreme Court appointed CoA has been looking over the operations of the Indian cricket board and Johri has been the man in charge. CoA’s statement had a mention of the social media post in which the anonymous person made allegations of sexual assault against the BCCI boss.
It also mentioned that though it is not from the time he has been employed with the BCCI, the board and the administrators seek an explanation from him. Johri has a week to submit the same and they will then determine the further course of action.
COA’s statement
“There are certain media reports today, including in the social media, pertaining to Mr. Rahul Johri, CEO BCCI. The reports disclose allegations of sexual harassment made against Mr. Johri, by an unnamed person through a twitter handle,” the CoA statement said.
“The allegations also relates to his previous employment with a large media house. The allegations have appeared as a part of the “me too” movement. Though the said allegations do not pertain to his employment with the BCCI, the Committee of Administrators of the BCCI has deemed it appropriate to seek an explanation from Mr Johri in relation to the allegations. He has been asked to submit his explanation within a week. The further course of action will be considered on receipt of his explanation.”
The woman in her account stated that she is a former colleague of Johri and he used his position at a “niche satellite channel” to present her an offer for a job. With that, he lured her to his apartment where the said incident happened.
Here is the entire email posted by an activist on Twitter which is the basis of the whole report:
