CoA chairman Vinod Rai opens up about holding back Shami's contract
Many had felt the matter had nothing to do with his professional career and should've had his name in the contract list.
The allegations of domestic violence on Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has left the cricketing world in shock given the fast bowler has been the vital cog of the national team. Even the police has charged him with non-bailable charges as the investigation over the matter might start soon. Soon, CoA also released the annual contracts of the Indian cricketers and the list was missing the name of Shami which was expected. However, CoA chairman Vinod Rai has opened up about the issue and has cleared the reason for holding back his contract.
There were mixed reactions after BCCI withheld the annual contract of Shami as many felt this had nothing to do with his professional career and should’ve had his name in the contract list. Reportedly, even the likes of Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri knew about his name not being included in the list at the eleventh hour.
What did Rai say?
The chairman of the Supreme Court appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA), Vinod Rai cleared his stance over the issue. “Ordinarily, you would distinguish and say that (the allegation) is a personal issue and the contract is a professional issue. But someone could easily point out and say this allegation is an unsavoury one and you are still rewarding him (Shami),” he was quoted as saying by Gulf News.
Future looking bleak for Shami
While there is still uncertainty over his contract, the future of Mohammed Shami is looking bleak. His participation in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season is unsure now with the CEO of Delhi Daredevils clearing that they are awaiting any direction from BCCI over the matter. Also, the Indian team will soon be travelling to England after the IPL and it remains to be seen if he is picked in the team in case the matter isn’t resolved in the near future.
