COA in no hurry to refer the S Sreesanth case to BCCI Ombudsman
"The new BCCI constitution lays down everything."
Former India cricketer S Sreesanth got a huge relief from the Supreme Court of India, as it removed the life ban imposed on him by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on March 15 and also directed the Indian cricket board to reconsider the quantum of punishment on Sreesanth in 90 days’ time.
To recall the events, S Sreesanth along with his Rajasthan Royals’ teammates Ankit Chavan and Ajit Chandila were all found guilty by police for spot-fixing in a match in IPL 2013 and spent time in Tihar Jail in Delhi. Sreesanth challenged the order in court in 2013. Sreesanth has played 27 Tests, 53 ODIs and 10 T20 Internationals for the Indian team.
COA to refer the matter to BCCI ombudsman
A bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan, asked the BCCI to reconsider its order of life ban imposed on Sreesanth. The apex court also said that its verdict shall have no effect on the criminal proceedings pending against the cricketer in the Delhi High Court, where the Delhi Police has challenged a trial court’s order of discharging all accused, including Sreesanth, in the IPL spot-fixing case.
The Committee of Administrator (CoA), appointed by the Supreme Court of India to oversee the workings of BCCI and to implement the Justice Lodha reformations, has decided to let the new BCCI ombudsman Justice DK Jain make a verdict on the issue of Sreesanth.
“We have not been given any choice in the matter. The SC judgment is quite clear. We will be referring the matter to Ombudsman. The new BCCI constitution lays down everything. Although the SC order says the matter has to be revisited by the disciplinary committee, according to the new constitution that authority rests with the Ombudsman. It doesn’t mean the matter will be referred tomorrow. We still have time and it will be done soon,” COA member Ravi Thodge was quoted saying by CricketNext.
